It was interesting to hear Michael Portillo interviewed on BBC News 24 this afternoon on the election and its aftermath. You will recall that in 1997 at Enfield Southgate Portillo lost his seat after a relatively distinguished thirteen year Parliamentary career which saw him as a junior minister to both Thatcher and Major, as well as being Defence Secretary.
Portillo’s point today was that when he lost in 1997, he felt he ‘met his end with dignity’. He went on to say that the spectacle of Gordon Brown effectively “camping at Number 10” was sailing very close to a loss of dignity for the Prime Minister.
Let’s just hope that the talks between Cameron and Clegg produce some agreed way forward for a coalition government so that Mr Brown can finally pack up and move out.
