The Joe McElderry Award – compliment or not?

You know how sometimes you don’t quite know whether something is a back handed compliment?  I had one of those moments yesterday when I was told I had been ‘mentioned in dispatches’ in the latest issue of Kent Business.

It seems that, on pages 16 and 17 under the title “The Year of Living Dangerously” the paper cites various awards – the Barack Obama Speeches of the Year Award, the Andrew Neil Journalism Award and so on – they’ve given me the ‘Joe McElderry Rising Star Award’ (click cover artwork to go to their e-edition).

They say “Kevin Lynes, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for regeneration and economic development and the voice of the Backing Kent Business campaign.  His speeches get better and he sounds like the businessman he is”.

Nice compliment, but wasn’t Joe McElderry the X-Factor winner who didn’t quite hit the top of the charts and has dropped out of sight in six weeks flat?
