The value of a well-rehearsed plan

Winter’s here early then! For thousands of people trying to get about in the last few days before Christmas, the heavy snowfall affecting the East and South East of England gave us all an extra challenge when we woke up on Friday morning.  I was in Essex on Thursday evening as the first snow began to fall, then drove back to Kent just ahead of the fall, which became thicker as the night went on.

For our kids, it was an early start to the Christmas holidays, as snowmen appeared everywhere and anything from old carpet to bin bags was brought into service as a makeshift toboggan.

At County Hall, Kent’s emergency planning team went into action with Kent Highways salting most of the major routes in the county, with snowploughs fitted to the gritting lorries.  A power cut in Sittingbourne caused additional difficulties, and the M20 was shut between Ashford and Maidstone, with the A2 being impassable later in the day due to two lorries jacknifing.  But once again our emergency services proved the value of a well-rehearsed plan.
