Last evening I visited Epping Forest District Council. Representing South East Employers, I went there to talk to a group of elected Councillors about Member Development.
the days where being a local councillor was simply a matter of being well known locally are long gone. Today’s local councillor needs to understand a raft of new legislation. They need to be careful over what advice they give and how they give it. Above all, today’s Councillor needs to be well trained and well briefed in a range of different skills.
Epping Forest, like councils up and down the country are making great strides to ensure that their members are the best they can be.
Which is an enlightened attitude, because at the end of the day we owe it to our residents to be the very best that we can be.
