It’s getting quite absurd now. With a press release from 10 Downing Street talking about the forty minute phone call between Primne Minister Gordon Brown and US President Barack Obama, Number 10 described a “warm and substantive” conversation which strengthened the ‘special relationship’ between US and UK.
Just an hour later, however, the White House issued their own press statement which talked of President Obama’s ‘disappointment’ at the decision to release Abdul Baset al-Megrahi, the convicted Lockerbie bomber on ‘compassionate grounds’.
It doesn’t really matter whether you believe al-Megrahi should have been released; it doesn’t really matter whether you believe there was an ulterior motive in a Libyan trade deal over oil.
The blinding truth is that, once again, this Labour Government have taken the whole country for fools, seriously believing they could simply ‘ignore’ this diplomatic catastrophe by not mentioning it. A catastrophe which has undermined Britain’s reputation with the United States.
I don’t know which is more annoying – that Labour can seriously believe we’re all so gullible; or that we’ll probably have to put up with eight more months of this “mushroom society” culture before we finally take the keys to Number 10 back.
