At noon on Friday, Kent Conservatives launched their County Election manifesto – “Strong Leadership for Difficult Times”. KCC Leader Paul Carter spoke to a packed audience about the innovations in education, social care and sport, then showed clips of the DVDs “Skills for the 21st Century”, “Towards 2010” and “Innovation”.
He spoke of the Cre8tive Youth TV project, the freedom of the Kent Card, and the Kent Youth Games – with 500 schools and 30,000 young people taking part in the largest youth sport event in Europe. The audience saw the benefits of our road building programme, the Kent Freedom Pass, the Gateway programme and TeleHealth. The presentation left the audience amazed that a local authority stretched the boundaries in so many ways.
Paul then presented the manifesto – KCC’s best Audit Commission report ever; the best academic report ever; the lowest crime rates; the highest recycling rates. He underlined the challenging financial times ahead, with the Government potentially reneging on their Comprehensive Spending Review next year. A £2bn turnover business which consistently comes in on budget; with this year the lowest increase in Council Tax ever.
Strong Leadership for Difficult Times – Kent Conservatives’ blueprint for action could not have been more appropriately titled.
