Did anyone see the “Top Gear” repeat tonight on BBC3?
Jeremy Clarkson and James May were testing Communist-built cars from Soviet Russia, East Germany and other communist bloc states.
They were testing a Lada Niva across rough terrain, and Clarkson commented that because they had coil springs, the Niva’s ride was surprisingly smooth.
To the extent, he said, that the last time he drove one down a rutted farm track some years ago, he was able to take out the cigar lighter and light a cigarette.
He couldn’t do that now, he observed as he drove the communist-built car, “because we no longer live in a free state”.
And you know he’s probably right. Since May and Clarkson were being filmed whilst driving, the Lada Niva will have constituted their workplace.
And taxi drivers in the Midlands have been fined for precisely the same offence.
