At 8am yesterday morning, I arrived at County Hall with some trepidation. KCC’s Chief Executive Peter Gilroy and I were due to appear as panellists in a “Question Time” style debate hosted by the Kent Branch of the Institute of Directors.
The two hour session was chaired by Chairman of the IoD Kent Branch Frazer Thompson, formerly Global Brand Director for Heineken, and now CEO of English Wines PLC based at Chapel Down Vineyard.
Our panel included Trevor Sturgess, Group Business Editor from the KM Group; Andrew Griggs from accountants Reeves Neylan; Philip Cunningham from solicitors Brachers; Paul Saunders from the Clydesdale Bank. From an audience of over sixty business leaders, the panel answered questions on:
- how to keep staff motivated during a downturn?
- what help is available to struggling companies?
- how to progress a business from owner/manager to successful large organisation?
- the role of KCC, SEEDA and Business Link in the future of Kent business?
It was fun, it was honest. It was a step further towards the new relationship with business” that KCC Leader Paul Carter and I talked about back in January. I’m looking forward to making that pledge ever more real as time progresses.
