Bitter sweet news for Alex Chatfield from Kemsing near Sevenoaks, who has been awarded a place at a grammar school. The grammar school is in Folkestone, and will involve a ninety mile round trip each day, taking five hours.
I know how his parents must feel. Two years ago my eldest daughter was offered a place at Maidstone Girls Grammar School, but for her to travel there from Lamberhurst would have involved at least two changes of bus and a train journey. The “TravelLine” website suggested that to arrive by 8.30am, she would have needed to catch her first bus at Lamberhurst fifteen minutes before lessons ended the previous day.
Of course, this worsening problem wouldn’t exist if Government allowed us to build more capacity for the growing numbers of able children who prefer a selective educatio.
