I see Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Service has been rated by the Audit Commission as the number one fire service in the country.
I’m not in the least bit surprised at this verdict. Since I joined Kent County Council in 2001, I’ve seen the service getting better and better. From their innovative approach to prevention, where officers drop smoke alarm and fire prevention leaflets to the roads surrounding a fire in the home; to their fire fighting training courses for young arsonists which have turned malicious intent into self confidence and aspiration, Kent Fire and Rescue Service is truly something to be proud of.
Bill Feeley heads up the service, and stands out as an inspirational lead officer, for whom I have the utmost respect, along with the rest of his team, including Chairman of the Fire Authority, Kent County Councillor Brian Cope.
Let’s hope their example will be followed by services up and down the country.
