Sir David Nutt, the incoming head of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs says that “ecstasy is less harmful than cocaine or heoin”, and therefore ecstasy should be reclassified, downgraded from a Class A to a Class B drug.
Try telling that to Sarah Phillips from Herne Bay, a 25 year old who experimented with just half a tablet whilst on holiday in Ibiza in 2001. Sarah spent the rest of her holiday in hospital, and four months after her return she suffered acute liver failure and needed a transplant – doctors gave her just a three percent chance of survival.
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) have commented that such a reclassification would be “unfortunate”, and at this stage it appears that the Government will not be acting on the Advisory Council’s recommendation.
Thank goodness for that.
