Wednesday saw a one day conference of KCC’s ‘Greenhouse’ group – young employees aged between 18 and 30. Around a hundred met at the event, held at Oakwood House in Maidstone.
A varied programme saw speakers scheduled from Kent Police; from the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme; and from KCC’s own personnel and development unit.
As the youngest member of KCC’s Cabinet, they asked me to open the event. I tried to be as frank and honest as I could – they deserved nothing less. The facts are simple. Over the next decade, local government will lose a third of its workforce to retirement. Only 14% of KCC’s workforce are 18-30, so we need at least twice as many.
And my only piece of advice? Don’t let the bureaucratic machine erode your spark, your freshness, your enthusiasm.
Because that’s why we want them at KCC in the first place.
