Recession? Someone should tell the customers at Argos

In the week that a trip to Woolworth’s in Tunbridge Wells was a sad affair – with price tickets on the display units as well as the products displayed on them; in the week that the Zavvi store chain – the management buy out of Virgin Megastores who must still be kicking themselves for choosing Woolworth’s as their distribution network, I rushed to Argos on the industrial estate  in Tunbridge Wells yesterday, to buy a birthday present for a friend of mine.

I just squeaked in at ten to five and presented my online purchase number at the counter. “Been busy today?” I casually asked the young lad behind the till.

“It’s been unbelievable. You know those number counters that call out the tickets? They go up to 999, and today they’ve been round the clock twice…”

My ticket was 266, so that’s 2,264 customers in one of the two Tunbridge Wells Argos stores on Boxing Day.

Recession? Someone should tell the customers at Argos.
