Just a week after Glaxo Smith Kline announced the closure of its Dartford factory with the loss of over six hundred jobs, paper mill owners Arjo Wiggins have today announced layoffs at their Dartford operation. Although formal consultations with unions and staff will continue over the next twelve weeks, the loss of 127 jobs seems increasingly likely.
I suspect we will see more and more of this kind of story emerging in the coming weeks and months.
Every time I’ve turned on the radio or television this week, I’ve heard nothing but gloom and doom. With unprecedented levels of housing growth, massive infrastructure projects, the 2012 Olympics just around the corner and a very real sense of determination in so many sectors, I only wish the media would stop talking down our prospects.
Why can’t they focus instead on the wealth of opportunity that Kent businesses are presented with?
